Propane Tank Placement Requirements

Placing propane tanks safely and in compliance with legal requirements is essential. The proper location depends on factors such as tank size, whether it is above-ground or underground, and proximity to buildings, driveways, awnings, property lines, and flammable materials. At Empire Propane NW, our service technicians are highly trained and knowledgeable in all applicable codes and regulations, ensuring every tank installation meets these safety and legal standards.

Below are the critical distance requirements to keep in mind:

Container Distance Requirements:

  • Most tanks must be at least 10 feet away from buildings and houses, but this may vary in certain circumstances (e.g., playgrounds, parking lots, railroad tracks).

Point of Transfer Distance Requirements:

  • The point of transfer is where connections and disconnections are made during propane transfer operations.
  • Distance requirements are crucial due to residual liquid release during the filling process and disconnection of the hose.

Relief Valve Distances:

  • Safety relief valves must be clear of obstructions and ignition sources to prevent hazards.
  • Propane tanks must be installed away from awnings or building overhangs to allow proper venting.

It is essential to adhere to these distance requirements to ensure the safety of propane consumers.
